early am - Jacob woke up and came into bed with us for snuggling. He has been sick since Sunday with fever but has seemed fine otherwise. He still has fever today :( but the doctor says if nothing else is wrong, just keep an eye on him. Michael said happy birthday to me then. 7 am - got up, took Jacob downstairs to Jennie to start breakfast. Got ready for work. 7:30 - Michael gave me my birthday present (antique diamond earrings with really cool earring jackets that match). Hung out with Jacob for half an hour. 8:00 - went to work, where everyone said happy birthday. Saw two really horribly foul smelling dogs - one was probably THE single worst smelling thing I have ever smelled. His presenting complaint was "he smells," turned out to have a tumor on his ear which was infected and - I can't even describe it without gagging and retching. I admitted him for surgery. Now, normally I'm done work around noon, but I ended up staying til closer to one, because they had a little party for me with a cake and balloons and singing :) and they gave me flowers and a Vera Bradley handbag with zebras on it (I already had the one with chickens and eggs on it :)). 1:00 went home. Jacob was sleeping, so I ate some lunch and went to the library and got some new books and returned the old ones. Checked the mail - got a spa gift certificate from Jason and Jamie - woo hoo! 2:30 - played with Jacob a little. Decided to take a bubble bath using my rose-petal bath salts from Valentine's day. I was soaking in there for oh, 10 minutes, when I got a little surprise -- Oskar the cat fell in. Boy was he pissed. He is always walking the perimeter of the tub when I'm in there and I knew this would happen one day. Our tub is large. He had to swim across to get to the edge to get out. Then I had to chase him around with a towel while he dripped all over everything. Eventually I got to get back into the bath for a little while. During the afternoon I also took some calls from friends and family who called to wish me happy birthday. Several people sang. My brother sang an obnoxious version he first sang to me when he was like 10, which cracked me up. 4:30 - resting on the couch with Jacob and reading. 5:00 - snacktime for Jacob - I gave him a snack and ate a few grapes myself :) 5:30 - Michael got home, we left to go to my folks' for dinner. Mom outdid herself with portobello risotto, asparagus, and shrimp in white wine/garlic sauce, and a bottle of Roederer Estate Anderson Valley sparkling wine, which is what Michael and I were drinking when he proposed (yeah, mom's a romantic, too). Jacob was a little grouchy and didn't eat much dinner but he did eat a lot of grapes, and some birthday cake - chocolate cake with coffee buttercream icing, oh my! Mom and dad gave me a "gift certificate" (handmade) for $150 worth of plants for my perennial garden, and mom's help with choosing and planting them (she's a GREAT gardener and has had a wonderful perennial garden for 10 years at her current house). 8:00 - got home. Got Jacob ready for bed. 8:45 - put Jacob to bed, got myself ready for bed, went to bed. 9:05 - got phone call from Jamie and had a nice chat. The rest of the day was very *relaxing* ;) A GREAT birthday. Of course, now I'm stuck being 32.
