back to where it comes from. While looking at major vessels, observe 
collateral blood supplies as well.

splenic, cranial mesenteric, caudal mesenteric = veins of the GI tract.

PORTAL VENOUS SYSTEM

there's a capillary bed in the jejunum, and a vein runs from the jejunum 
to the liver. this is the PORTAL VEIN. it opens into a capillary bed, 
blood is passed through, and then blood is carried out of the liver by 
the caudal vena cava.

in fetus, there is a DUCTUS VENOSUS , a vein carrying blood from the GI 
tract through the liver to the vena cava - WITHOUT emptying into 
capillary beds. perinatally, the ductus venosus shuts down, and liver 
starts being used, and blood flows through the capillary beds. Sometimes 
puppies don't close the ductus venosus, and the animals get very sick, 
demented from toxin buildup.
