10.7.96 Dr.Orsini two handouts: TVA references for smallwood; lab assignment sheet. this part of the course gets confusing. whereas small miller presented a cookbook guide to dissection, there's no such large animal analog. note that the horse and the ruminant are really quite different esp. wrt GI tract and hindlimb. we're going to be using SMALLWOODs guided tour of veterinary anatomy, and it's the best we've found. note that we'll dissect a goat instead of a cow because they are quite similar. also ponies, small horses, a donkey or two. how to organize. smallwoods is REQUIRED. get it. read it. read the introduction. he's pretty funny. this is called a "guided tour" because it's a guide through the animal, and a guide to the textbood (Dyce, Sack, and Whatisname.). So, note that the diagrams that he refers to are in dyce. Sack's guide to the dissection of the horse should be found used for peanuts. Feel free to get one if you want; not required. Good for dissection of distal limb of horse. 95% of all lameness is carpus/hock and below. We'll be dissecting "fresh frozen" horse limbs. Think of this as the graduate part of the course. Nickel Schumer and Sheffely (sp???) three book series. viscera, locomotion, and circulation. the viscera book is really good. is a translation from the german. So. now we have to remember that large animals are LARGE. they take up lots of room. there's a lot of formalin. it's messy. floors are slippery. be careful. previous years, skimmed entire animal. now, we're only having half the large animals out at one time. 6 groups do one thing, 8 groups do another. see blue handout from last week for assignments. note that you will need to find your dog head and take it to your new table. dogs are tagged in the mouths. what dissection today? 6 groups will start large animals. (table 37, Equine). everyone else will be doing either spinal canal of dog, or hooves and digital bones. Make sure you follow the BLUE sheet as opposed to the original lecture weekly schedule, because we're not organized the way the weekly schedule says. how do you know what specifically to look at? Check out the handout given today for reading assignments.
